Cingular Recovers from Massive Outage

Cingular experienced major outages throughout its GSM network for much of the weekend, leaving about 900,000 customers without service. The outage stretched from Friday afternoon until Sunday morning. While Cingular could not comment on possible causes for the blackout, the company is investigating the failure of an HLR (Home Location Register) in Atlanta. Cingular encourages customers who were affected to contact customer support or visit a company store to find out more about having their account credited. The company is also looking into whether blanket credits should be assigned to customers in affected areas.

Google today made it possible for Maps users to share their exact location with friends and family. In Maps, users need only tap the blue dot (signifying their location) and select those with whom they'd like to share.

AT&T has agreed to pay a fine of $5.25 million to the FCC for its failure to connect 911 calls during two short periods last year. The FCC called the 5-hour outage in March 2017 and 47-minute outage in May 2017, during which some 12,600 and 2,600 911 emergency calls failed, respectively, unacceptable.

Sprint today indicated which markets will be first to see 5G service from the carrier at some point in the first half of 2019. Sprint said customers in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C.

Sprint's 5G network launches tomorrow in Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, and Kansas City, as previously announced. In the coming weeks, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Phoenix, and Washington, DC will also gain 5G service.

Google defies the wishes of mobile device users and tracks their whereabouts even after people turn location history off, reports the Associated Press. An investigation conducted by the Associated Press found that many Google apps and services on both Android and iOS devices continued to pinpoint users despite their wishes to the contrary.
