Samsung today announced the industry's first multi-chip package (MCP) that relies on PRAM technology for flash memory, instead of NOR memory. PRAM provides three-times faster data storage performance than NOR chips, according to Samsung. The new PRAM package is also backwards compatible with older packages that used NOR onboard with a stand-alone PRAM chip. Samsung expects PRAM to replace NOR in the next year, and says that PRAM is easier to manufacturer, especially with the development of 30nm and smaller manufacturing processes.
