Gov to Test Prison Cell Phone Jamming

Article Comments  40

Feb 17, 2010, 4:56 AM   by Eric M. Zeman

Today the state of Maryland is conducting the first sanctioned test of jamming cell phone signals in and near prisons. The test, to take place at the Federal Correctional Institution in Cumberland, Md., is meant to prove that cell phone jamming can be deployed in prisons and have no effect on the surrounding communities. State governors and correction facility directors have asked the Federal Communications Commission to change the current laws, which only permit other federal agencies to jam cell phone signals. They want to halt illicit use of cell phones by inmates, who use them to conduct criminal activity from inside their cells. If the test is successful, it will provide support for a bill currently before congress seeking to change the laws.

bad idea

if your car breaks down close to that prison...your screwed!!! what are the guards going to do as far as communication with family when at work? Or family coming to visit inmates? No cell? anything could happen. This can cause more problems than it can solve. beef up security..beef up staff. get more strick on the laws governing prisoners with cell phones.
Doesn't work. Hell guards are the ones bringing the phones and drugs in.

how often do people travel that close to prisons? I bet you would have to be a couple yards from the prison
first of all, nobody needs to visit in prison, its time out, not a social network. and if your car brakes down by a prison, im pretty sure thats a sign of some sort.

Ban Cell Phones Instead?

Why not save the time, energy and money and just forbid the possession of cell phones in prison? πŸ˜•
I hope your joking. What would make you think people in prison would have the luxury of using a cell phone. Of course they are already banned. Cell phones in prison are a big a problem as drugs.

Right now, as we speak, a con is drafting a response to this post on his web-enabled smartphone.

I agree, enforce the ban, add 5 years in prison for those caught with one in prison, 10 years in prison for a corrections officer who sneaks them in and sells it to them.
they already do. just like the outlaw shanks and drugs but somehow they have both

I myself am a Correctional Officer. So here's my point of view to help clear this up and maybe answer questions.

1. Cell phones are forbidden inside a correctional institution for both staff and inmates. No exception!

2. Yes, most contraband is...

Do the Jailhouse Rock

Maybe AT&T can have Luke Wilson film a commercial from inside Pelican Bay while the Gov't is testing. He can show AT&T's superior 3G service even works while he is dialing for help as a couple of big bucks stare at his ripe hiney. 😲
There's a map for that...therefor, he's screwed! 🀣

No GPS needed in that case. 🀣

A better explanation as to how this system works.

Basically cell phone jammers release convergent cellular waves so that a cell phone antenna isn't able to extrapolate the cellular signal from white noise. Although on a large scale this could cause a cell phone to lose signal, the system will only use triangulated microcells to alter the impedance of RF systems.

Modern Jammers are able to use this triangulation to precisely block phones with no outside interference. If your cell phone only picks up the convergent macrowaves from one of the jammers, it will still be able to extrapolate an actual cell phone signal from the white noise, as only 1/3rd of the cellular waves from the nearby tower interfere with it. However when triangulated between 3 or more jammers, cell phone service is eff...

Thank you Senior Scientist for that enlightening information.
Not everyone who visits this website studied this as intensively as you did. πŸ™„

That is GREAT! So there is no effective argument against this as no one outside the prison should be affected?

Got to love Big Brother

Give them time and they will jam cell phone service in states that vote Republican πŸ™„
Of course, this would NEVER happen under a republican administration. You know, like the "free speech zones".

Or maybe they'll jam posts like this. πŸ™‚
