A consortium of large telecommunications companies have formed the Wholesale Application Community, an alliance dedicated to building a platform that will let developers sell applications across a range of devices. The Wholesale Application Community hopes to offer applications that can run on a variety of operating systems, and which will be available on multiple operator networks. The Wholesale Application Community includes some notable U.S. companies, including AT&T, Sprint and Verizon Wireless, as well as manufacturers LG, Samsung and Sony Ericsson. It is noteworthy that none of the major manufacturers with their own OS to support, such as Nokia, Apple, RIM or Microsoft, are yet on board with this concept. The alliance plans to initially use requirements from the Joint Innovation Lab (JIL) and Open Mobile Terminal Platform BONDI initiatives.
