RIM Eying Nortel Patents
Jul 27, 2009, 12:36 PM by Eric M. Zeman
According to Reuters, Research In Motion has been in talks with Canadian networking company Nortel for months now to purchase some of its patents related to wireless technology. The patents in question are not tied to Nortel's CDMA/LTE assets. Those were recently sold at auction to Ericsson for $1.13 billion. RIM did attempt to bid on those CDMA/LTE assets, but was shut out of the auction. RIM did not comment on the other Nortel patents it is interested in, but analysts said they are "material" and could help save RIM money by reducing licensing costs in the future.
