Verizon Wireless today launched the Casio Exilim phone. The high-end camera phone borrows Casio's brand for standalone cameras, and combines a rare 3x optical zoom lens with a 5.1 megapixel sensor. The camera is also auto-focus and has a flash. It is also water-resistant, meeting military specs for water immersion, humidity, salt–fog, shock, vibration, dust, sun, altitude, and temperature. Other features include EVDO Rev. A Data, memory card slot, 180-degree rotating display, stereo Bluetooth, and HTML web browser. The Exilim phone is available today for $279.99 after $50 online discount, with 2-year contract.

Are they kidding about the price?

I mean really... in this day and age with $99 iPhones.... no one has ANY business charging more than $99 for a dumbphone. Nice camera or not.
I'm really starting to think the only thing VZW has going for them is the call quality/signal. It is crazy how they disable features like WI-FI & GPS on certain models to make more $$$. Now a $279 flip phone w/a camera? WTF?

The iphone requires a $30 a month data plan. The 3g is also outdated, aka it is a generation older. Of course it will be cheaper. New iphones are still 199.

Dumb phones do not require a data plan, meaning that carriers cannot subsidize the cost ...

maybe you get a hooker and a hand job for that price
If you don't like the price, don't buy the phone. Simple as that.
its cuz of the name brand Casio. I mean 99 for a casio is a steal. Its all about the name.

Still the same lame VZW UI

Look like it still has the same VZW UI. When will they get rid of it and get something more modern? Look at Korean and Japanese "dumb" phone's UI's. Maybe VZW should learn from those guys?
One of the reasons I won't buy another dumbphone from Verizon and will stick to the smartphones.

It's a 5 Megapixel Waterproof Camera with a phone attached!

You can moan and groan about the price all you want, but the simple fact is, most phones have sucky cheap cameras! This is a real camera with a phone added on it, and waterproofed and stuff. OF COURSE it's going to be expensive!

Your $99 iPhones don't have 5.1 Megapixel Cameras with an optical Zoom, powerful Flash, and Water Resistance or even just plain ruggedness. Yes, their nice playthings, but I need something that isn't going to explode with screen glass and electronic parts if it slips out of my hand while I am using it.

$280??? Does military specs and a 5 megapixel warrant that price point???

This is an absolutely absurd price point. The $330 upfront cost is one of the most expensive out there among all carriers right now, and that's including the really high end smart phones. Don't get me wrong a 5 megapixel camera is great and the military specs could be useful for a lot of users but that's a steep price for a cell phone by Casio. Isn't this the first phone they've made? Not a very thought out price but the same could be said for a lot of phones
They are the same company that makes the Gzone line of phones for verizon (which are also rather pricey)

The phone also sports a full html browser, and evdo rev a data (making it great for tethering).

We'll see how it sells. We've sold countle...

Didn't Samsung already do this...with the Flip Shot?

I mean, it is basically the same concept.

Plus, the 280.00 price on contract is a little steep.
The FlipShot is 2 years old now, and the 3.0MP camera was far below what people would expect in terms of quality. Hopefully the Casio will deliver.

The flipshot didn't meet Mil-spec for durability.

This is also an optiocal zoom, a full HTML browser, and EVDO-RevA speeds.

The flipshot was also really expensive (200+) for the majority of time it was out on verizon's network.

Oh, and pa...
