Today Verizon Wireless added several new companies to its mix of Long Term Evolution technology partners. First, Verizon selected Giesecke & Devrient to provide Java-based SIM cards, which will help Verizon provide new LTE-based data services. Verizon also picked Gemalto to provide an over-the-air platform and LTE Universal Integrated Circuit Card (UICC), which will help Verizon Wireless deliver a more secure and more reliable multimedia data connection, provide global roaming and the ability to remotely add new UICC card applications.

Hmm, Java-based SIM cards...

Usually it's the cellphone that is Java based, not the sim card. I guess these new Java based sim cards will be part of this new LTE (4G) revolution.

It sure will be very, very interesting to see what sort of handsets Verizon has 14-18mo`s from now.

I just hope batteries get much, much better in the next 18 months, as phones become ever more increasingly multimedia centric.
that would be very very nice.
