Today NTT DoCoMo announced new technology it has developed for cell phones that will allow end users to assign spatial locations to different audio sources when using stereo headphones. For example, end users can set up conference calls so that different parties on the call sound as though they are speaking from different locations (to the left, center or right). This could help cell phone users differentiate between the parties on a given call. DoCoMo also believes the technology could be used to separate audio such as a phone call and a podcast. DoCoMo is currently working to bring the technology to commercially available products, but didn't provide a time frame.
