Today Sprint announced a new application for feature phones called ScanLife. The app allows users to scan 2D barcodes on products or marketing materials and be taken to a specific Web site, provided with a ringtone or screensaver download, begin a streaming video clip or receive contact info. ScanLife is a free application and works on over 30 Sprint phones. Sprint will add to the list of compatible models in the coming weeks.

Another :CueCat failure?

I'm just wondering, since it just seems like an updated version of Digital Convergence Corporation's :CueCat program, is it doomed to meet the same failure?

I just don't see consumers taking this too seriously.
The :CueCat was a revolutionary product launched back in 2000 that came way before its time. It had tremendous disruptive potential from a technology standpoint, but the drawback with the :CueCat was that it was a "tethered" device -- meaning the user...

Walled garden approach

Which would you rather have?

1) You scan a barcode on a book and your phone pulls up whatever the creator wants you to see - ads, etc.

2) You scan a barcode on a book and it pulls up whatever information you want about it - prices in other stores, reviews, whether its at your local library, etc.

Choice #2 is obviously more consumer-friendly.

Am I reading this wrong, or did Sprint just go with Choice #1?

The "we'll tell you want you want and you'll like it" approach is going the way of the dinosaur - or at least it should.
It's a free app. Of course they will force adverts down your throat. I'm sure there will be a paid application that does what you want it to do, if it's not out already. For the low low price of $10 a month or something. 😛

You will need an Auto-focus camera

It does not seem to work with a fixed focus.

My Mogul is 2mp fixed focus and could not get it to work.
