FCC Clears Verizon Wireless's Acquisition of Rural Cellular

The FCC has given Verizon Wireless permission to acquire Rural Cellular Corporation. In order to complete the purchase, one of the two companies will need to divest wireless licenses and assets in six different markets, one in New York, three in Vermont, and two in Washington. The acquisition was first announced in July 2007. Verizon Wireless is paying $2.67 billion for RCC's assets in markets spread around New England, the Mid West, the South and the Pacific Northwest, which cover 716,000 people.

As Verizon eats up independent carries, what's going to be left to provide competition for them? Wait, I'm looking into my crystal ball, it's becoming clear, wait! I see the future, Verizon gobbles up Sprint! Mission Accomplished.

Umm confused here South Dakota only has Altel and Verizon wouldnt they need to divest this market as well
since legally they only can have two nat'l carriers.

This has nothing to do with Alltel. Verizon bought out Rural Cellular LONG before they announced the acquisition of Alltel. There would be NO WAY the FCC would already make a decision on the Alltel merger yet!!!

i'm not sure. that's a good question. but won't alltel become verizon? if they do, then wouldn't that make it just verizon and not both? is there no AT&T?

Incorrect

This post says that there are two divestitures that have to take place in New York, but that is untrue. Only one is occurring there, and THREE in Vermont.
