Today Alltel announced that it will begin upgrading its data network to EVDO Rev. A technology for faster uploads. It will start with 18 markets, including Charlotte, New Orleans, Phoenix and Tampa, and expand from there over the course of the next six months. It will initially offer Rev. A data speeds to users of its laptop cards, which include the Huawei EC228 USB and the UTStarcom UM 150. Alltel is also allowing users of the HTC PPC6800 and the HTC Touch smartphones to upgrade their devices to support Rev. A speeds. The upgrade is available from HTC's web site. Rev A. permits average upload speeds of 500-800 Kbps with bursts up to 1.8 Mbps, allowing you to upload something such as a 1MB PowerPoint presentation in 15 seconds.
