Intro Samsung LG Motorola BenQ More Comments  100+

Live reports from the 2005 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Hot new phones from LG, Samsung, Motorola, Audiovox, and more!

CES - the Consumer Electronics Show - is one of the largest technology trade shows in the world. Every year in early January, the world's consumer electronics industry takes over Las Vegas, transforming it from Sin City to Gadget City.

Well... almost. Like last year, the Adult Entertainment Expo is being held at the same time, just down the street at the Sands Expo Center. But CES is growing so fast that next year CES will take over that space as well. Yes, really. One (very large) convention center is no longer enough to contain this massive tech extravaganza.

Cell phones have historically been a small part of CES. It used to be you could count on just a few new phones from Audiovox and Samsung, but now more companies seem to be getting in on the action. LG and Motorola are both expected to make a splash this year, as well as a few smaller companies. In an even bigger shift, carriers now seem to be stepping up to the plate, with Verizon expected to make a big announcement here before the week is done.

Throughout the week, Phone Scoop reported from all the major events, as well as the show floor, to bring you the most in-depth coverage anywhere of new cell phones and mobile phone technology at CES.

About the author, Rich Brome:

Rich has spent two decades researching and covering every detail of the phone industry, traveling the world to tour factories, interview CEOs, and get every last spec and photo Phone Scoop readers have come to expect. Any recommedations for Bluetooths for Samsung A930?

Now that I have had my Samsung a930 phone for a couple months, I am ready to get a Bluetooth headset. This is real new to me. A couple months ago, some forum users said some sets were incompatible with this phone. Any recommendations for which Bluetooth works well with this phone? I notice that the prices for Bluetooth sets on ebay run from a few dollars to way over $100. What is a good price point for a headset? Are the cheap ones any good? Thanks.

What happened to T-Mobile?

It seems as if LG and Samsung are dealing with Cingular and Sprint users' needs but not anyone affiliated with T-Mobile.

Am I wrong Rich Brome?

I would like to see a megapixel phone with video capture for T-Mobile.
Is there anything coming out like that for T-Mobile?
T-mobile has the P735.

Yes, such phones are definitely coming.

There's not being featured at CES because they're coming later in the year. What you see here is mostly Q1 and some Q2 phones.

More phones, including most of the Q2-Q4 models, will be shown at various trad...

T-Mobile announced that they will not be launching a 3G network, and that's where everything is headed. Verizon and Sprint launched their's almost three years ago, and Cingular is launching a full 3G network next year. T-Mobile is behind the times.

Thumb covering service provider logos on all LG pics!?

Rich,

Is it me, or does it appear like you're purposely covering up the service provider logos on all the pics of the LG phones? In all the pics, your thumb and index finger are right where the logos would be located. Just looking at the pics of the VX4700, your thumb is right where the Verizon logo would be and in the pics of the F9100, your thumb and index finger are covering the locations of the Cingular logos. I'm assuming that LG told you to do that before taking pictures but everyone already knows that the VX4700 is for Verizon and F9100 is for Cingular. The logos are also covered in the pics of the other LG models.

kidding aside, i'm looking forward to checking out LG's line again, even after suffering through their VX1000 (Verizon) of four years ago.

SGH-E865

Does anyone know when this phone will be available?
How much will it cost?

I am glad to see a Bletooth Samsung phone for T-Mobile.

The one major problem is the money problem.
T-Mobile has very expensive phones for example the Samsung P735 (the swivelling flip phone) costs $500!!!

The SGH-E865 will have Bluetooth and will record video longer.
Can I expect a price of $600?

Thanks.

iDEN PHONES??RICH

hey rich besides the bluetooth i605.. i think.and th i930..was there any other iden phones,or any ones in works that would be out later this year? 😁
Only the i830e, which is just the i830 plus SDGC (selective dynamic group call), which lets you add/join groups right from the from the phone (instead of having to pre-configure them first on the network).

They weren't showing it off at CES, but I ...

Is Samsung going to come out with any Bluetooth phones?

In your detailed descriptions, Rich, it never states that any of the Samsung phones are going to have Bluetooth.

Is Bluetooth a risky technology that Samsung does not feel is important?

I mean Bluetooth isn't for everyone, but you would think that Samsung would have at least one phone that includes Bluetooth.

Thanks.
Samsung i730 has bluetooth.

The D500 that is released in Europe also has bluetooth. From the looks of some pics and details that were leaked that I have seen, most of Samsungs yet to be announced phones will have bluetooth and 1+ mp cams.
There are more Samsung Bluetooth phones coming.... Stay tuned.

Why no new verizon world phones?

What happened to the a840 and are there any new world phones for verizon coming out any time soon?
The A840 should be out very soon.

I wouldn't expect there to be a large lineup of such phones. I think Verizon is happy having exactly two such models. I wouldn't expect something new until Samsung or Motorola decides the A790 or A840 is outdated a...

Amoi looks interesting

Hey Rich, first time poster, but long-time reader. Excellent site with excellent coverage. Thanks! 🙂 I'm intrigued by Amoi's G6301, though it obviously needs polishing. I think we're just going to see more and more innovation in this basic form factor- it offers alot of promise for having a large landscape screen with an optimal viewing orientation. QWERTYs are increasingly important, and gaming might actually be a good experience in this form, too. Being obsessed like many, I'm curious how you got into this blog business, Rich. I think you and people like yourself who cover phones/gadgets for a living have the best job ever. I'd love it. Any feedback you could provide would be most appreciated.

Any new plans for ...

Was Danger at CES?

Has anyone heard of any new plans for a new Sidekick?
I think that more people would buy the Sidekick if it had Bluetooth and a better quality camera.

Did Motorola say anything about an upgrade for the A630?
It would be nice if the phone had a better quality megapixel camera and maybe a better phone layout.
The phone part of the A630 looks old.

Thanks.

LG A7710: Questions

Does the LG A7710 have a memory card slot?

How much memory does it have?

Is it still coming out later this month as Phonescoop says?

How much will it cost?

This looks like a great phone, but these questions must be answered first.

Thanks.
No memory card slot.

32 MB of memory (not bad for a VGA camera).

Yes, it should be out soon.

No idea on cost, but it should be less than the P777.

Photos

Rich,

You took some great-looking pics with the A800.

Were you able to take any pics with the Samsung P777, Motorola V635, or the LG A7110?

How did they look?

Thanks.
I did take and post V635 photos. Check out the Motorola pages.

None of the others had memory card slots, or active service to send the photos. You can't really jusdge camera quality from just looking at it on the phone display.

HPON - has anyone used a GSM Model?

I have been hearing about the HPON phones. The price looks good but I don't know if they will work with Cingular. The website says you can buy a GSM phone for $136.00 and get your carrier to activate the phone. Has anyone heard of them or if they actually work?

No Nokias?

I've read the recent announcements about the 6822, big deal, a new screen. Nokia previously stated that they were going to release 40 new handsets this year. I'm surprised that there are no reports coming from CES. Were they not in attendance?? Surely they would at least show off some current models. Or hopefully the new dual-cam 3G that engadget had a few weeks ago? Nothing?! 😢
On the show floor, they were only showing off their automotive solutions. Bluetooth car kits and that kind of thing.

They did have the new 6822 and some current models at a press event, but nothing really newsworthy, IMO.

If you saw the news bit...
