Synaptics' new multi-touch sensors open the doors for a lot of new user interface ideas. Here's a quick video that demonstrates some of the simplest things 10-point multi-touch can do.

Synaptics recently announced two new capacitive sensors. Why is this important?

Capacitive screens and multi-touch have opened up a whole new way to interact with mobile devices. By enabling complex gestures on the screen, handset makers and user interface designers can take advantage of the technology to do really neat things.

One example Synaptics showed us (watch the video) is "crumpling." Using three fingers, you can spread them out and then close them together, crumpling the screen into a ball as you would a piece of paper. It sounds silly, but think how this could be used to trash an email you had written. Crumple it and toss it with on-screen gestures. It's not earth-shattering, but it's a lot more fun that clicking a "delete" button.

Another advantage that this new tech from Synaptics has is that is can support input from two different users at the same time. This means multi-player games are a go. Synaptics showed us an example of that, too (again, see the video).
