The Bluetooth Special Interest Group announced a new specification today that will combine Bluetooth and Wi-Fi for faster large file transfers between devices. The system will connect devices via Bluetooth, and then switch transfers to Wi-Fi radios if present. The standard will be a temporary substitute for ultra wideband, but not a replacement. The Bluetooth SIG expects the Bluetooth/Wi-Fi system to be available in 2009. It will continue to develop UWB for fast data transfers beyond that time frame.
