Verizon Wireless is partnering with MTV and RealNetworks to deliver a comprehensive digital music service that stretches across PCs, MP3 players and cell phones. MTV and Real have formed a new company called Rhapsody America, which will offer MTV's URGE content via Real's technology. Verizon has teamed up with this new entity and will add its V CAST Music service to the mix, allowing subscribers over-the-air access to Rhapsody content, which includes album art, music, ringtones and videos, from their handsets. In addition, Verizon stated that it will offer phones that can hold up to 8GB of media by the end of this year, and 16GB in 2008. Music from Universal will be DRM free from the start, and Real's other DRM-free music will be added over time. Verizon did not state what format the OTA tracks would be available in, nor anything on pricing or when the full service will launch.

Ok. Rhapsody Subscription music on Whorizon. Sprint, what's your answer to this?

Time to get the pen and paper going with Napster To Go or Yahoo Music.
actually . VZW is the one that had to answer.... Sprint has had the Pandora music service available on many phones including the Upstage, Sanyo 8400, and katana DLX for several months already, and Sprint on Vision and Power Vision has been out for a...

I hope...

Verizon will offer songs at .99 to truly compete with i tunes and others and not keep songs at a ridiculous $1.99 a song.
Gee, $.99 songs over the airwaves??? to bad no one else has thought of that... Oh Wait i think someone has... gosh now who did that earlier this year??? hmm i just can't think of them ...Oh Yeah it was once again "Sprint, Ahead"
...
The reason it's 1.99 is because a copy of the song is transmitted to the phone and another copy to your computer. So technically that's two purchases so royalties have to be paid twice.

Having the option to only download to the phone would be nice...

VZW does compete with iTunes at 0.99 per song when you buy them on your PC just like you have to with iTunes. The 1.99 price is for buying htme over the air.
1.99 Thanx Vzon fan

Will it be easier to sync with MAC PCs?

Will this new development make it easier to bring in music downloads from MAC OS X PCs to Verizon phones with Windows software?

Not actually "Launched" per se...

Be careful with that wording. This hasn't actually launched from the cellular perspective. PC Rhapsody & Urge users can begin logging into both services immediately o the PC, but there is no immediate change to Vcast Music. Should be later this year that Vcast Music will be impacted and content can move both ways. All VZW has committed to thus far will be an auto copy of Vcast songs available through your rhapsody account and vice versa. They have not yet confirmed that the subscription content of Rhapsody will be transferable to vcast phones (although I assume it will). Also, I don't think the DRM free tests are related.

8 GB?

That remains to be seen.
Seems as though things are speeding up fast! The day will never come though when I switch over to evil Verizon πŸ‘Ώ

But things like 8GB handsets, and next year, 16gb handsets will force AT&T to compete at higher levels also, I wouldn't be one bi...
