Sprint, Clearwire Partner On National WiMAX Network

Cementing its commitment to WiMAX, Sprint confirmed today that it is working with Clearwire to build out a nationwide WiMAX network. The network will primarily be used to provide mobile broadband services in both urban and rural areas. Sprint also said it will offer dual-mode roaming between its CDMA network and the new WiMAX network. Each company will build networks in regions where it owns spectrum, and the two will permit roaming between the networks. Sprint and Clearwire plan to have 100 million people covered by the end of 2008, and eventually up to 300 million across the entire U.S. No timeframe exists for the larger network yet. The first markets will be up and running in the first half of 2008.

With this new Wimax lauch sprint is now winning any race by a mile versus a few feet. Speed already has the largest coverage area both voice and data, Wimax is just a larger enhancement!!!!! 😁 better watch out competitor 👀

They might. AT&T and Verizon don't see the *need* for the high speed internet right now I don't believe. Sprint wants to do it because they want to be the company that large companies turn to for their internet needs and they want to be on the cutting...

Probably not until late 2008 at the earliest. Sprint will want to get most of the top markets covered before they start letting anyone else use the new network.

Well, sort of. HSDPA has a max downlink of 14.4 Mbps and uplink of 384 kbps. WiMax has a theoretical downlink and uplink of 70 Mbps.

What??? The fastest HSDPA as of right now is 14.4 Mbps. If you beam the information they target it to eventually meet 200Mbps (remember thats Beaming it) While WiMax is still new technology it will soon reach 70 Mbps. The HSDPA has to receive many up...

atleast i can say one thing about wimax... it can be a complete data phone and use voip for data. which may mean barely dropping calls and not rely on gsm tower with high speeds

As both systems use air interfaces radically different from those already deployed, neither standard can operate in the same physical spectrum as prior standards, though an FDD version of HSOPA can share licensed cellular spectrum allocations as long as those allocations are greater than the 6.25 MHz (5 MHz for W-CDMA and 1.25 MHz for HSOPA) minimum required for both standards to co-exist.
In practice, most UMTS networks should be possible to migrate at the tower level to HSOPA without the need to obtain more spectrum, except where legal barriers exist preventing the use of non-IMT-2000 air interface technologies.

For those interested, HSOPA is a subset of the LTE set of standards. LTE is still in the development stages so we won't be seeing this releasing on a U.S. carrier until after WiMax is nationwide.

Thank you ClearWire. I have read about this technology when it was first announced. Its been a worry of mine that Sprint may give up on the 4g WiMax technology. Now this really screws up the other carriers of getting enough of the spectrum to go toward WiMax. Sprint already has enough of the 2.5 Ghz spectrum to cover most of the Internet. While Clearwire also owns much of it, I'm sure they will buy some more spectrum when it gets released later this year. Now I can securely laugh at all the TM, Verizon, and At&t users, while I download my content. Ha ha ha ha!! 🤣
