MediaTek has announced the Dimensity 8000/8100 5G chip for high-end phones. This new, high-end chip sits just below the company's flagship Dimensity 9000 chip. Comparing the two chips, the new 8000 series has slightly scaled-back performance in most areas. For example, it uses a 5nm manufacturing process instead of the cutting-edge 4nm process of the 9000. It also uses the simpler Arm architecture of four A78 big cores + four A55 efficiency cores. (The 8100's big cores run at up to 2.85 GHz, while the 8000's big cores run at up to 2.75 GHz.) However it still supports up-to-date technology to support high-end phones. This includes a 3GPP Release-16 5G modem supporting 5G carrier aggregation, MediaTek's 5th generation AI processor, cameras up to 200 megapixel, simultaneous dual camera HDR video recording, 168 Hz display refresh, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.3 with LE Audio. Phones using the Dimensity 8000/8100 will start shipping later this month.
