Jun 4, 2007, 11:06 AM   by (staff)

Apple yesterday began showing television commercials which revealed the iPhone will launch on June 29. A 4 GB model will be available for $499 and an 8 GB model will cost $599. Purchasing either device will require a new (or renewed) two-year contract. Apple expects high demand for the iPhone, but will not allow the devices to be pre-ordered. The iPhone will only be sold on a first-come, first-served basis at Apple and AT&T retail stores.

PEOPLE CAMPING OUTSIDE OF COR AT&T STORES NIGHT BEFORE

i know of 6 people that are going to camp outside of our store. i live a city of 100,000+....just think of the metro ares. also the Iphone is only @ CORPORATE AT&T, APPLE stores! don't waste ur time going to resellers! due to the fact the iphone is first come first serve. the fone is going to have a major impact. i have read what others have said. it's not going to sell good. BULLCRAP. our stores are getting changed around to prepare for the launch. we are going to hire another person just to walk around and show the Iphone off. the day apple stated they will launch the Iphone. their stocked almost TRIPLED! so for the people that say it is not going to sell. just wait đŸ¤Ŗ
I'm with you. We're actually limiting the amount of customers allowed in the store that day. 8 reps = 8 cust in store. (plus the managers if they are there).

If you need a regular phone, or are having problems with your phone, stay away on the 2...

Why this phone won't matter

This is just my opinion and guesses:

1) It will be purchased by the existing base more than the new customers. (Not as much growth as wanted)
2) A lot of people who purchase it would not subscribe to the MediaNet plan because of the WiFi. (Not as much data growth as wanted)

That's pretty much it. It will most likely be sold out and out of stock all over, but the question is how much data will Cingular gain, and how much increased voice revenue and subscribers will they gain?
I agree that there will probably not be that much more growth. But the will be making a lot of money with the price of the unit. As I understand Apple negotiated some sort of wierd concessions. I can't remember the details, but there is definately ...

3) With flash memory approaching 4-8 GB (the technology is there, it just has to get more affordable), the iPhone's music capabilities become less unique. Sure it works with iTunes, but that's about all that's noteworthy. With a 4 GB flash card, any...

Does Anyone Know if It Will Have IM

Just Thought I would ask incase someone did know, I really use IM alot on my phones would be great if the phone had it but I guess if I had to I Could do without, since it still has SMS, any feedback would be appreciated. 🙂
This is another disappointment for the phone, IMO. There will be no IM or MMS support for the phone in it's initial release. That's not to say that they couldn't add IM support down the road. As you said, SMS is a work around until new applications ar...

HOLY CRAP, YOU ARE ALL STUPID

America is in debt up to their ears. If american citizens didn't spend one peny on anything...and I mean anything, food, housing, cars, etc. for one year, they still wouldn't pay off all their credit card debt. And your telling me people are gonna wait in line to spend 500 on a cell phone that won't get them laid??????? get a life people, its just a cell phone. Anybody who buys this phone is obviously lacking in every aspect of their life and anatomy. plus its huge and ugly, get a life.

Forget the initial price...

I think what people will hate most is their bill when they get it, for the service + WiFi, bills will be close to $100 a month, $500 for a phone isn't nearly as much as $1200 a year for service...and of coarse there will be the many who buy it, then somehow are surprized that internet costs extra...
Well for starters, wifi doesn't cost anything. You can get a media plan for $19/month, so where are you getting $100/month in extra charges? 😕

No MMS or IM!

Ouch! I think someone missed the mark here. The iPhone looks to be lacking MMS or IM on its initial release. I hope at least IM will be added later. Sure you can send media email and SMS text messages but it's not quite the same. ☚ī¸

There is just no way

There is no way anyone can make me believe that millions of people will pay $500 for a cell phone. Maybe a couple hundred thousand at best. And MAYBE 1 million if they are lucky...

ps
I bet Lockline wont insure them either.
Well, the 8525 is $400, but then again it does about 10 times more things as the iPhone.

When the RAZR launched years ago it sold for $399 WITH a 2 year activation, and it captured about 6% of the phone market back then(according to motorola). Is 6% percent more than a million? i would certainly think so, even back then when there were no...

iPhone contract details? Where is at&t?

Okay, it's only a few weeks from launch; Apple has laid out details for months now on what the price and specs will be on the iPhone. We've even seen commercials citing two year contracts are required for this unsubsidized phone. However, where's at&t? Where are the details on price plans, and contract information? Speculation is rampant and while you have to get contracts to buy an subsidized phone, there are always details on prices without the contract attached to any other phone. How will this play with the unsubsidized iPhone? Will the data/voice plans be subsidized therefore the requirement for the 2 year contract? I think at&t is dropping the ball here and the lack of communication is reflecting poorly on their part so far.

I'm in ...

I haven't had a contract since 1999!!
Maybe this is a good time to give it up
I'll get the 8GB iphone and sell the phone on ebay for $1500!!! HAHAHAHHAHAH that would be awesome!!!!!
This actually brings up a good point. Since there is not an easy way for the end consumer to put in a SIM card, what if I want to sell this to someone else? How easy would it be for someone else to use this phone after it's already been on someone e...

NO 3G data on iphone = SO WHAT !!!

I dont really get whats all the fuss about the iPhone not having 3g data speeds. The iPhone has WiFi, what else do you need? You can customize the phone to your liking, add you own music, pictures, movies ect. without paying a dime. What is it? you want to surf the web while waiting for the bus ? At a park? Come on please, Almost everywhere I go theres a WiFi hot spot, and dont forget about peoples apartments with open networks 🙂 Me personally, Im not getting no data plans, cause I dont need it. I wont pay for music or themes or wallpapers or what ever AT&T want to sell me. Why ??? Because APPLE is releasing a software developers kit for the iPhone baby !!!! GHEA GHEA
Yes, I understand your point. So do many thousands of other apple enthusiasts that will be sitting next to you as you camp out waiting for the store to open. But being able to develop, carry music, video, etc. are nothing new (see Symbian and Window...

EDGE is old technology, will it be software enabled HSDPA ??

Disclaimer: the following refers to the situation in the US. The Europe and Asia are light years ahead of us.

1. As we all know EDGE is at the end of its life cycle. I've had EDGE for just about 2 years now. The WCDMA is the current technology, and HSDPA is starting to ramp up.
2. It is a well known fact that during this transition period, WCDMA/HSDPA will kill cell phone batteries due to the constanst switching between high speed enabled towers and their non-high speed counter part towers. This also causes problems with dropped calls.

But, ultimately...some day (I hope) Most towers will be HSDPA compatible. I assume that this transition will happen in less then 2 years. Hence my question:

Why should I buy the iPhone with i...

No contract pricing??

how much will it be available for on no contract????
As far as we know, the iPhone will not be available without a contract. At least initially. There is no word from Apple or AT&T what the monthly contract for the iPhone will cost. The TV adds explicitly state that a 2-yr contract is required.

For goodness sake! You cannot purchase the iphone without contract. It will require a 2 year activation or upgrade as everyone has been stating for months!

AT&T Data/Voice Plans...

Does anyone out there have information as to what the pricing will be on the data plans that will be available for the iPhone? Will they be the same/similar to the data plans for other AT&T smartphones?

Also, I'm guessing that the voice plans will be the same. If anyone has any information to counter that, that'd be helpful as well.

I also wonder if there will be a (slightly) discounted bundle that AT&T will offer combining voice, data, messaging, etc., now that more consumer level people will be using "smartphone" devices. I am sure that a lot of consumers would be cautious about paying $100+ per month to take advantage of everything the iPhone offers.

Any information would be much appreciated!

why the iphone wont fail

BECAUSE i have had hundreds of people call in just to ask about the stupid thing

and im only on the phones for a couple hours a day

people want to know if they can pay more to reserve one

i even think it will be a waste of money but if people are willing to blow money on a ps3, they will be willing to blow their money on an iphone.

electronics are like the new crack
I remember the first time I saw the iPod and thought "who the hell would need that? My walkman does the same thing"

If they ever lower the price a couple hundred and make it available on other carriers, everyone will have this thing, just like the...

2 year contract?

Maybe this has been asked, but I wonder how Apple can sell it with a 2 year contract. Meaning, from what I understand, at&t will only sell the iPhone with a 2 year contract. no 2 year contract, no iPhone. But how will apple regulate this at their retail locations?
