Google Photos Adds Map View
The Google Photos app and service has been redesigned, and now includes a map feature that lets you explore all of the photos you've ever taken as pins on a map. The map feature is part of a new Search tab in the redesigned app interface. The new Search tab also includes automatic shortcuts to specific people and pets that you frequently photograph, using automatic facial recognition. The new Google Photos app "rolls out over the next week" on Android and iOS.

Google today made it easier for pet lovers to manage pictures of their feline or canine companions. Google says Photos will now treat pets as the family members they are, grouping them alongside people and allowing users to name and/or label them.

Apple today pushed out a significant update to the Shortcuts app, which lets iOS device owners make more connections between Siri and actions. For example, new shortcuts let people ask for the current weather or the weather forecast, easily set alarms and timers, convert between a variety of units and measurements, as well as view the most recent batch of imported photos.

Google has redesigned its Podcasts app, and made a version available in Apple's App Store for iPhone users. Google Podcasts now stays fully synced between all platforms, including Android, web, and iOS, so you can pause a podcast on your phone and automatically pick up where you left off on the web.

Apple today announced iOS 12, its next-generation platform for the iPhone and iPad. Apple says it spent time improving the performance of the operating system, which in claims will work well on iPhones and iPads that went on sale as far back as 2013.

Facebook today rolled out a new feature meant to help people control when and where their image is posted to Facebook. Using the same facial recognition functions meant for tagging, Facebook will now notify people when they appear in a photo on Facebook even if they haven't been tagged.
