Google today announced .app, a new top-level domain reserved specifically for applications. Registered Google developers will able to snag a .app domain for their application, securing a place on the web to showcase their app. "With a memorable .app domain name, it's easy for people to find and learn more about your app," said Google in a blog post. Developers will be able to use the new domain "as a landing page to share trustworthy download links, keep users up to date, and deep link to in-app content." Google says a key benefit of the .app domain is that it is highly secure and will protect against malware and other threats. Developers registered with Google will have first crack at their .app domain names between now and May 7. General availability for .app domains will kick off after May 8, which coincides with the start of Google's I/O developer conference.
