Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel today said the company plans to rebuild its Android application, making it easier to use and more appealing to novices. "To attract more Android users, we are building a new version of our Android application from the ground up that we will launch in select markets before rolling it out widely," said Spiegel today as part of the company's quarterly earnings call. "This new version of our application leverages everything we have learned about building for Android over the past five years, to provide a more performant product experience that we know our community will appreciate." Spiegel says its Android app has already improved by leaps and bounds this year, though he suggested the 60,000 individual Android form factors using the service have complicated its engineering efforts. Spiegel admitted that the app can be difficult to understand and hopes the new version will help boost its user growth. Snapchat didn't say when it might roll the new app out to beta testers or end users. Snapchat is popular due to the ephemeral nature of its content and disappearing stories.
