Qualcomm Offers Look at Low Cost Chip

Qualcomm today took the wraps off a single chip solution for entry level phones. The QSC1100 provides all the necessary components for an entry level CDMA2000 phone including voice calling, text messaging and polyphonic ringtones. This inexpensive chip is designed to cut the costs of handsets for emerging markets by up to 50%. CDMA has been less popular in poorer countries recently as Motorola, Nokia and other manufacturers have been able to create extremely inexpensive GSM handsets. Licensing and handset costs on CDMA have prevented manufacturers from offering low cost solutions for these new markets. Samples of the QSC1100 will not be available until the second half of 2007.

why bother

GSM is already out there in the world. CDMA doesn't need to be an option. Lame.
