Sprint To Rein In Boost

Sprint COO Len Lauer said that the carrier will make changes to halt the growth of its youth-focused MVNO Boost. Boost is outpacing Sprint growth, and is getting large enough that it will soon put a strain on Sprint's iDEN network. The iDEN network is already under pressure because Sprint was asked to give up a portion of its iDEN spectrum to the FCC in order to create clear public safety bands. The growing population of Boost users are straining the shrunken network even further, and Sprint would prefer that the limited capacity was used to serve Nextel customers, who typically pay more per month to use iDEN handsets. Sprint has not detailed how they will curtail Boost's growth, however Sprint previously announced another initiative that should thin out Nextel's crowded 800 MHz spectrum. The carrier intends to launch dual mode handsets that use CDMA for voice and data calls, and only relies on iDEN for Push To Talk. Sprint's first dual mode handset, the ic502, has already been cleared by the FCC.

The Sprint way of doing business is broken

👿 I work for sprint directly at a High traffic store in Maryland, I sell both consumer and business customers. I see first hand why sprint will never be the premier carrier that verizon is. Not until they fix the poor customer experience that leads to irate customers, we need a customer care rep in every store not to mention a security guard. I personally have verizon and I see first hand the different experience that you feel when you walk into a VZW store and a Sprint store.

By the way Boost mobile is ghetto wireless at its finest just listen to the hold music when you call customer service. And I am a young black male =) so that I'm not racist in any way.

Sprint has the potential to truly dominate the wireless market!

Some poster's here have pointed out that when the new iDEN/CDMA hybrid handsets are released Sprint's iDEN capacity will be much less strained because the iDEN network will no longer need to carry as many traditional cell calls that require more bandwidth than the PTT calls require. This is true, and an excellent short term fix!

There is a solution that only Sprint is positioned to utilize thanks to the Nextel merger, which if implemented could solve not only the iDEN network capacity problem, but also Sprint's rebranding and Sprint's slowing growth of new subscribers.

The solution is simple! Sprint must speed up its implementation of the interoperability of the PTT radio feature across all three of its wireless divisions. This would ...

Should just shut it down

Its only used by gangster wanabes anyway and paid for by drug money. Boost=gang speak for steal
It is not that simple because it is a source of income for Sprint. The only problem is that it is on the wrong network because Sprint has ample spectrum and capacity while Nextel does not especially going through the FCC re-banding plan.
"Boost in only used by ganger wannabes and paid for by drug money." What the hell are u talking about? Boost is used by people with not such good credit. So there targeted to teens and people who dont have good credit but where u get off by saying suc...

I'm sorry guys , but even though I don't agree with the original poster's complete lack of tact...I agree with his point.

Sprint did this to themselves

A few months ago, Sprint changed the credit classes to be more expensive for nextel IN AN EFFORT TO SELL MORE BOOST. They actually went on record and said that. Now they want to change their own doing because it worked out too well? Maybe if they did NOT outsource their customer service and hired people in the United States that actually speak english (not engrish or engwish), they would actually have a great customer base that don't want to port out when their contract is over. That is one thing that Nextel and Boost have, GREAT customer service (that 😲 SPEAK ENGLISH)
I think I just heard Carlos Mencia say "det de dee".

Not only is Sprint losing alot of legacy Nextel customer base due to the change in credit class ratings and decline in service and coverage they are also losing legacy Nextel employees due to the...

A SIMPLE solution...

Why doesn't Sprint just use the new dual-mode phones for Boost too? There is no law that says Boost HAS to be 100% iDen! Why not have PTT oniDen and voice on CDMA. EVERYONE will be happy!
"Cause then it would be simple" 🤣 🙄 😉

MVNOs gone bad!!!

HA HA HA I wondered how long before you would start hearing these type of stories, with the recent obnoxious onslaught of these prepaid services. Not a great situation for Sprint.
What they should do is halt sales of Boost Mobile, and make CDMA walkie-talkie pre-paids instead since they are rolling out revision A. Cause either way Nextel isn't going to be around in about 4-5 years right? So what's the point in having all these ...

Well, it is not a great situation for Sprint but, it will get better when Qchat comes about and the FCC re-banding plan is complete, but by then, Qchat will be on the network and then you will see changes.
