OmniVision hopes to make mainstream handsets better at capturing high-quality selfies. The company today announced a new camera module for volume smartphones that takes 8-megapixel images and is compact enough to use on either the front or back. The OV8856, which measures 6.5mm by 6.5mm, and has a height of 4mm, is 15% smaller than OmniVision's previous-generation sensor. The OV8856 uses OmniVision's PureCel pixel architecture and can capture 8-megapixel images at 30 frames per second, as well as full HD video at 60 frames per second. Moreover, the sensor supports interlaced HDR for improved contrast during video capture. OmniVision is also making a variant of the OV8856, called the OV8855, that supports phase detention autofocus for quicker and sharper focusing. The OV8856 and OV8855 are already sampling and OmniVision expects them to begin shipping during the fourth quarter.
