Europe Approves Nokia's Purchase of Alcatel-Lucent
The European Commission today gave Nokia permission to move forward with its acquisition of rival Alcatel-Lucent. Following its initial review, the Commission approved the deal without placing any conditions on the terms. The acquisition still needs to be approved by Nokia's shareholders and antitrust regulators in a handful of other countries. Nokia expects the complete the deal during the first half of 2016.

Nokia's attempt to acquire Alcatel-Lucent has cleared another hurdle now that it has won approval from China's Ministry of Commerce. The anti-monopoly body will allow the proposal to move forward under certain conditions, which mostly pertain to licensing standard essential patents.

Nokia today said it has officially taken the reigns of Alcatel-Lucent after its public exchange offer for Alcatel-Lucent was accepted by the French stock market authority. Nokia expects to merge the two companies in order to form a telecommunications powerhouse to compete against Ericsson, ZTE, and others.
