The Bluetooth Special Interest Group today said it plans to create a mesh networking profile for Bluetooth. It formed the Bluetooth Smart Mesh Working Group, which will create the underlying architecture needed for standardized mesh networking. The Bluetooth SIG believes the increased use of Bluetooth Smart-enabled devices around homes and businesses will be better served through mesh networking, rather than point-to-point networking. More than 80 companies have already volunteered to help create the mesh profile. The participants are charged with developing something that will work across industries and can provide solutions for lighting, HVAC control, asset tracking, and security. The Bluetooth SIG expects to have a working version of the standard by the middle of the year and hopes to formally adopt the profile at some point in 2016.
