OmniVision Outs Two High-End Camera Sensors

OmniVision today announced two new camera modules for high-end smartphones. The OV23850 and OV21840 PureCel-S are capable of capturing images as large as 23.8 and 21.4 megapixels, respectively. Both sensors use OmniVision's staked die technology. According to OmniVision, this separates the imaging array from the sensor so OEMs can place other sensors and functionalities in between, such as phase-detection autofocus. The company says its two-dimensional autofocus is four times faster than traditional contrast-based AF. Both sensors can capture quad HD video at 30 frames per second, 1080p HD video at 90 frames per second, and 720p HD video at 120 frames per second for clean slow-motion results. They also support always-on HDR video capture for balanced exposures. The OV23850 and OV21840 are already sampling and are expected to reach production during the first quarter of 2015.
