Twitter to Acquire Twitpic, Keep Photos Alive for Now

Twitpic today announced that Twitter has agreed to take over the Twitpic domain and photo archive. Had Twitter not scooped up Twitpic's assets, the photo-sharing tool would have shut down entirely. Moving forward, Twitpic users will be able to sign into their accounts online to retrieve their photos, delete them, or delete their account, but not to post new photos. The service will remain up and running in a read-only mode. Accordingly, Twitpic has removed its Android and iOS apps from the Google Play and iTunes app stores. "Twitter shares our goal of protecting our users and this data. Also, since Twitpic's user base consists of Twitter users, it makes sense to keep this data with Twitter," said Twitpic's Noah Everett in a blog post. The company made the decision to shut down after Twitter demanded Twitpic abandon its trademarked application or risk losing access to Twitter's API. Twitpic launched in 2008 and was one of the first tools for sharing photos within Twitter.
