Qualcomm Wednesday announced they have achieved peak download speeds of 3.6 Mpbs using a new HSDPA chipset. The chips are not available for new handsets yet, but samples were used to test download speeds using existing network equipment from a number of suppliers. Qualcomm has additionally said they hope to reach speeds of 7.2 Mbps on the same chipset in the near future. This advancement confirms earlier reports that HSDPA networks support download speeds of 3.6 Mbps or higher, but that initial phones for the network would only be capable of supporting 1.8 Mbps.
