Cingular today confirmed they will launch Push To Talk (PTT) handsets on their network later this year. Many Cingular handset partners have recently announced partnerships with Kodiak, hinting that the carrier will use Kodiak's RTX as their PTT solution. Cingular also announced they expect to have a music download store next year. The carrier said they hope to offer the downloads for a price just "slightly higher" than the 99 cent price the iTunes Music Store popularized. Cingular also added they haven't decided on a technology or store partner yet, but that they hope to work with Apple.

I think they should have waited

I think they would be far better off holding off on PTT for a short time. They should focus their efforts right now on the network integration. They will only bring more heat down on themselves when someone signs up and thinks they are getting a solid voice service much less a solid ptt service. Cingular doesn't even have cs agents prepared to deal with problems customers are having with voice.
With 50 million customers & rising, you can't please everybody, all the time. I've had AT&T GSM and recently migrated to Cingular GSM and I have the best service EVER! As far as network integration, you must still be on AT&T's oldest network, TDMA. Tr...

Thats good news for Cingular!!! QUESTION THOUGH

Im glad to see Cingular throw its hat into the PTT arena. Because Cingular is using this Kodiak's RTX for there PTT, can we assume it will automatically be better then verizon and sprint? And if its way better, do you think it will take off in a larger way then verizon/sprint?

Having used this new RTX PTT solution, I can say that it without question a fantastic product. It rivals/beats Nextel on speed between beeps and offers a feature set that is second to none.

Throw in more PTT coverage than ANYONE else and it shou...

PTT over their entire network???

Will their Push to talk cover their entire network or just the 850 or 1900?

Anyone have any idea?
YUP The ENTIRE network and it's next month not later this year.

They'll also let you convert a PTT call to a regular call with the push of a button have PTT messaging for when you can't answer a PTT call (yup they'll have a do not disturb option fo...

Cingular's PTT will cover both 850 and 1900 MHz spectrum. However, it will not initially involve "affiliate" or "roaming partner" markets, so it is not the same thing as working everywhere a Cing customer can make a phone call.

That being said, it...

What phones?

Has there been any announcement on phones for this? I am really looking forward to getting a new phone, and I DEFINITELY want a PTT capable phone. So what's the lineup going to be?
Initially, a Samsung and an LG. Of those 2, the Samsung looks better, and is supposed to have Bluetooth. The LG is a slider, the Samsung a flip.

I think that would make it the first PTT phone with BT, right?

Fastchat

Geez did everyone forget about this???

http://www.fastchat.com/us/ »

I have T-Mobile and a Nokia 3660 (I know that my phone is old) and I have used this to PTT to friends in the US... I must say that having an EDGE phone w/ the same OS would be even better... But I don't pay for any $20 a month thing at all. 4.99 T-Mobile Web (no minutes used) and 4.99 for the fastchat service... The only thing was they are now only working with carriers now... I guess the end user model did not work. It was cool though. I would love to see T-Mobile bring this to the table... This is by far the best PTT/IM software that I have come across.
The problem with "FastChat" is that it's actually the slowest PTT technology. The latency is always going to suck without special support on the network side.

Cingular's PTT, meanwhile, will use Kodiak's RTX, which has a reputation for being...

Music Store

OK so Cingular got the iTunes Motorola ROKR phone and now they are working on a Music Download Store and hoping to partner with Apple. Music downloads over wireless networks won't be 99 cents atleast for a very long time to come but if they can offer $1.50 downloads instead of the $2 per download that Sprint Nextel is rumored to have then I am going to be sad to say that Cingular might dominate the whole Wireless Music thing. $2 for a song is a little steep but I would be willing to pay a little extra ($1.50 no more) to have the convenience of downloading it directly onto my phone over the air. Plus I use iTunes at home. The only way I can see Sprint or any other carrier winning in a situation like this is if 1. The MP3 capables phones are s...
