Dell today announced it will begin selling a laptop with built-in EV-DO high speed data next year. The computer maker already has a deal in place to sell the laptop with Verizon service. Until the new laptop is released, Dell will resell Verizon's V620 EV-DO Card for use with current models. Earlier this year Dell announced they would build high speed cellular data into computers, but speculation centered around technologies such as HSDPA and WiMax. Dell is not the only manufacturer making an EV-DO play, Verizon is reportedly in talks with Lenovo (nee IBM) and has announced HP will be building EV-DO laptops as well.

How fast is EV-DO?

Is it faster then a standard modem (56K?). Do phones that have this have full internet browsers? I'm a GSM guy, so I have no idea.
Think low level DSL. I think VZW claims 500 to 800 kbps or so.
...
400-700kbps with bursts up to 2Mb/second. Average dialup connection is 19k. So... EVDO is potentially 36 times as quick as dial up!
well it depends what you are talking about... there are rev o and rev a.

rev o can do up to 1.5mb/s with speeds from 400-600kb/s. rev a is up to 3mb/s with avg speeds of 1.5mb/s.

hope that helps.

Hopefully other will too

I really hope that some other manufacturers get on the band wagons such as HP or toshiba. I own a dell laptop, and would not own another one. The available choices in hardware is extrememly limited and customer service is 20 times worse than sprints. Sony makes laptops that support cingulars data networks, but it would be great to see manufacturers make laptops that are capable of using any carriers card internally. Personally I hate having something sticking out the side of my laptop.
I do agree with your comments; however, I use a HP laptop, which I do love but their customer service SUCKS BIG TIME!!! so don't think it is just Dell. I would like to see a laptop with a universal cellular card as well. Another company that would b...
