Verizon today announced a new international high speed data plan that leverages their EV-DO network with Vodafone's 3G network. GlobalAccess uses an EV-DO card for laptop access to Verizon's high speed data network in North America and a UMTS card to access Vodafone's 3G data network in Europe and Asia. The plan includes unlimited data in the US and Canada, 100 MB per month of data in most Tier 1 European countries, and access in many other countries for 3 cents per KB. GlobalAccess costs $130 per month and requires new users to purchase both PC Cards for $380 with a one year agreement or $280 with a 2 year contract. Subscribers with a BroadbandAccess account can purchase a UMTS card separately.

Hardware cost...

That seems pretty resonable for snagging two cards at once...

2 devices = 2 users?

Since you *must* have two devices, one UMTS and one EV-DO, does that mean one man can use UMTS in Berlin while the other uses EV-DO in Orlando (at the same time)?

Pretty expensive...

Tmo is $0.015 per kb and that's with any of our data features ($5.99 tmo web for handsets, $19.99 for unlimited internet/sidekick/blackberry, and $29.99 corporate internet/sidekick/blackberry access features and $29.99/$39.99 respectively for standalone plans). Verizon's unlimited at $130/month plus $0.04 per kb charge must be nice if one's employer pays for it, but I think I'd stick with unlocked gsm with prepaid or per session wifi access instead.

Question

Which other carriers have an international data plan all ready? Is verizon the first one?
Cingular does offer int'l data roaming. The cost is just under 2 cents per kilobyte.
