Opera Announces Web Browser For Java Phones

Opera today announced a new solution for users with Java phones who want to access the web and not just WAP sites. Opera Mini is a J2ME client that displays websites on a phone, however the phone does not have to do any of the heavy processing required to reformat and render the site. A server loads and optimizes the site then sends the optimized output to the J2ME client on the subscribers phone. This is how browsing works on the Danger Hiptop as well. Opera Mini will only be sold through carriers and is not available directly from the company.

Sounds cool

Could be cool! Java is on a bunch a phones that don't have browsers. Just sounds weird that we have to get it from our providers. I'm assuming that they would make more going 3rd party, but who knows.

Mass confusion.

Is it me, or have we read about at least 9 different handset web browsers in the past few months? Can the industry even support that many standards?
