Android 4.4 Named "KitKat"

Google today announced that the next major version of Android - version 4.4 - will be named KitKat, after the Kit Kat candy bar made by Nestlé. Each major version of Android is named for a sweet treat starting with a successive letter of the alphabet. Only major versions get a new name. So while version 4.0 was dubbed Ice Cream Sandwich, versions 4.1-4.3 all shared the name Jelly Bean. Therefore version 4.4 is expected to bring more major changes compared to versions 4.2 and 4.3. Google has not announced any details of the new release, hinting only that it will "make an amazing Android experience available for everybody". Google and Nestlé have teamed up on a promo for the new software. Specially-marked Kit Kat bars will come with a code good for the chance to win a Nexus 7 tablet or Google Play store credit.

Just Cupcake, 1.5. Technically you also missed 1.0 and 1.1, but those did not have code names.

Major version? Why 4.4 instead of 11.0?

In the rest of the computing world a MAJOR revision change to software results in an increase of the MAJOR digit of the version number. Therefore with "K" being a 11th digit of the alphabet of the language Android's naming is following that means this version of Android OS ought to be 11.0. It sure would make life easier handling these OSes if Google followed this basic convention.

Except KitKat Isnt Made By Nestle

... In the USA, it is made by Hershey, under license.

So... being that Nestle and Google teamed up, I can assume that the promotion will ONLY run in nations Nestle markets KitKat (worldwide EXCEPT the USA), while we get stuck with nothing since it is not a branding with Nestle AND Hershey...

I'm really glad that...

Android versions also have numbers, so that I can simply call it 4.4. I understand that businesses exist to make money, but I ain't calling this thing Kit Kat until someone starts paying me to do so (read: never, hence my being glad).
