AT&T to Begin HD Voice Deployment This Year

AT&T senior VP Kris Rinne indicated today at a speaking engagement that AT&T will begin to deploy HD Voice later this year. "HD Voice is part of our voice over LTE strategy," said Rinne to an audience at the VentureBeat Mobile Summit. HD Voice improves the quality of voice calls. Sprint has deployed several HD Voice-capable devices, and T-Mobile USA recently announced that its version of the Apple iPhone will be able to conduct HD Voice calls. Rinne didn't say when HD Voice would go live, nor which devices would be able to use the service.

Qualcomm will make a big push to bring high-speed mmWave 5G to more affordable phones in 2022, according to comments made by CEO Cristiano Amon during a Q&A session at the company's Snapdragon Summit event in Hawaii today. For a phone to support mmWave 5G, multiple specialty antenna modules need to be added, which can raise a phone's price by $50 – 100.

Qualcomm is teasing a new Snapdragon 4xx chip that will support 5G. The company is withholding details for now, but promises that devices using the new chip will ship in the first quarter of 2021.

AT&T today announced its plans for the C-band radio spectrum it recently acquired in FCC Auction 107. The company will "begin deploying the first 40 MHz of this spectrum by the end of 2021".
