Most wireless subscribers in America can today sign up to receive AMBER alerts on their handsets. When a child goes missing, a text alert with pertinent information is sent to all handsets registered in that locale. Participants can choose to receive alerts for up to five areas. The AMBER system has already helped in the safe recovery of over 200 children, putting critical information in the hands of people on the streets, where they are more likely to encounter the child, abductor, or car described could further improve AMBER's success. Subscribers to the following carriers can choose to participate: Alltel, Cingular Wireless, Dobson Communications, Nextel Communications, RCC/Unicel, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular and Verizon Wireless.

I didnt know that

I take it I just call my provider and ask how to sign up. Good to know, thanks for posting that phonescoop. 🙂 🙂
Actually, PsyKe posted a link in another forum. Funny it popped here too. Basically you go to the website sign up and choose five zip codes to recieve alerts from. I assume standard txt msg charges apply.

It's free too

All "big 5" carriers are waiving the fees. Good to hear!

Down here in FL there have been too many AMBER alerts lately, but some have worked which is always great to see.
just another way to get people alerted to a serious situation. I know if my kid ever went missing I'd want EVERYONE to know and get as much help as humanly possible
