SunCom has launched the Firefly, a cellular phone designed for school children ages 8-12. The phone has dedicated call buttons for mom, dad and 911 and can store 20 additional numbers in a phone book. The handset is a very small GSM phone with youth friendly features like replaceable see through and glowing covers, seven colors of LED backlights for the screen, and a backpack clip. SunCom is selling the phone with 1200 minutes of talk time or 12 months of service (whichever comes first) for $199. Additional 1200 minute packages can be purchased or parents can add the phone to their family plan.

not sensitive to our progressive society

I find the key pad on this phone intollerant to the needs of our society. These gender specific icons discriminate against children with two mommies or two daddies. In our ever changing society I think it is important that we cater strictly to minorities.

I hope this is a sarcastic post. But in reality you know someone out there will sue because of the same idea you present in the post. 😳 If this IS a real post and not a good bout of sarcasm...then you need a reality check. πŸ™„
You know what's so terribly sad about our culture? We have to ask if this is sarcasm!
hahaha serious or not you have to admit it was kind of funny 😎

Perhaps you're just being stereotypical - who says it really is for mom and dad? The male and female buttons could be programmed to dial the persons girlfriend *and* boyfriend, if they are so inclined!

I cannot believe the audicity of your comment. In your cause for equality, you left out many other minority parental situations. There was no mention to children born to unicorn parents? There was no mention of a Clown - Elephant relationship? Where a...

What a load of CRAP. In this country the MAJORITY rules. We don't cater strictly to minorities. That would mean they make the rules but not enough people agree with thier point of view. Look, if you want to ban smoking inside a restaurant, and enough...

All I have to say is some people are WAY too sensitive and I hope the post was intended as a joke. I myself am a lesbian and I do not take the mommy and daddy buttons as an insult or insensitive. It could just be that I don’t understand. I don’...

Cool concept - At least for me.

They should make a phone with a dedicated Prank Call button! 😁 When pressed, it dials a random number and I'm set.

In my spare time I do a sort of Jerky Boys type thing where I make crank calls, record them, and put them on CD.

My best one I did in my opinion is when I prank called Enzyte (stupid cmmercial for male enchancement with stupid guy always smiling) and I convinced them that after taking their supplement I was and still was unable to stop smiling. I had it going for a long while before this guy came on and was completely rude to me! πŸ‘Ώ 🀣
And yes, I am kidding about the dedicated Prank Call Button.

Do 8-12 year olds really need this?

There's no way in hell I'd get my 8-12 year old a cell phone.
i work for cingular, you'd be shocked at how many 12 year olds have cell phones. and how much they use them, most 12 year olds send 2-3000 text messages a month alone, this is a great idea to make them use the phone for what the parents want them to u...

Big Money

I think this is a great idea! I think it will make SunCom lots of money. Parents want this. Me personally, I wouldn't get a cell phone for my daughter if she was 21, but there are tons of people who do. I think the other carriers will follow this item and clone it.
