Microsoft today said that it plans to make Windows Phone 8 updates available to users who want to install them on their Windows Phone 8 devices, even if their carrier and/or device manufacturer won't officially support them. If a given Windows Phone 8 device is not being updated by the carrier/manufacturer in an timely manner, Microsoft will provide an unapproved update of WP8 to those who don't want to wait. Microsoft said the offering is meant to help appease enthusiasts and developers. Microsoft has yet to decide exactly how it will distribute the platform to such enthusiasts, and has not yet set guidelines for how the program will work. Microsoft said more details about the program will become available in the coming months. This update program does not apply to Windows Phone 7.x.
