Google today announced that its Google Earth product will soon add realistic, three-dimensional renderings of buildings and landscape to in both the Android and iOS platforms. Google explained that it uses a series of photographs that it took via airplane and combined those images with existing map data to create realistic 3D renders of cityscapes. Google demonstrated the 3D technology on an Apple iPad in Google Earth. Google said that the first batch of 3D cities and regions will go live later this year, though the company didn't specify which cities in which countries would have access to 3D mapping data first.
