FCC Head Open to Licensing Government Spectrum

Federal Communications Commission chairman Julius Genachowski today said that the government is open to the idea of re-licensing government-held spectrum for commercial use. "We have to do things like look harder and more carefully at government spectrum," said Genachowski, as well as look for more "innovative ways" to make use of existing spectrum allocations between the government and commercial sectors. Earlier this year, the NTIA recommended that the government repurpose some of the spectrum currently being used by federal agencies and share it with commercial entities. Wireless network operators are racing to meet the increasing demand for mobile services, and access to spectrum is paramount in their efforts.

Here's an innovative way

Cellular Hand-off to wifi networks completed automatically when entering a wifi calling zone.

In downtown Toronto, no matter where you are in that city, there is wifi available thanks to broadcasting routers on almost every corner / lightpost. When there, i never, ever touch or even think of using my actual cellular minutes / data, everything goes through the wifi.

wifi handoff and secondary wifi networks ARE the cure to this spectrum "crisis".
