FCC Lays Foundation for Cell Phones In Flight

The FCC today took several key steps toward allowing cell phones to be used on airborne aircraft. The commission proposed allowing standard mobile phones to be used in conjunction with "picocell" on-board relay stations, such as systems demonstrated recently by Qualcomm, Boeing, and others. Still to be decided is whether the rules will include both major mobile-phone frequency bands, or just the 800/850 MHz band. Separately, the commission announced an auction of two licenses covering a total 4 MHz of spectrum for air-ground communications. The new spectrum could be used to provide the ground link for a picocell, as well as other voice and data services. In addition, the commission is seeking technical ideas on how the 800/850 MHz mobile-phone band might also be used for air-ground communication without interfering with existing wireless phone networks.

NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😲

That's definitely a possibility.

Talk, talk, talk

Do we have to talk in the air? I mean, it is already uncomfortable enough. Do we have to hear everypart of your conversation? Why can't we just be safe and turn the phones off?
