New Display Technology To Challenge LCD, OLED

Display start-up Iridigm has developed a new reflective screen technology called "Interferometric Modulator," or "iMoD." The device is up to three times brighter than reflective LCDs, while consuming less power. iMoD displays also have a wider viewing angle and are thinner than comparable LCDs. The displays employ a MEMS technology that varies the distance between a metal membrane and a thin film, to reflect different colors, or none at all. iMoD displays will be able to hold a still image using little or no power - a key feature for mobile devices such as handhelds and mobile phones. Major investors in the company include Intel Capital and Qualcomm.
