Bell Mobility yesterday launched its CDMA 1X wireless network in Montreal. In the summer of 2002, Bell Mobility will introduce 1X service to major urban centres across Québec, and throughout this year, 1X service will be available in the majority of Bell Mobility's coverage area. The new 1X network is capable of supporting data speeds of up to 144Kbps and will deliver cruising speeds up to 86Kbps, as much as five times faster than previously available. An added benefit to the network is the 'always-on' capability of its packet-based platform. Initial devices include the Kyocera 2255 and Samsung SCH-N370 phones, and the Sierra Wireless AirCard 555 PC Card. The 1X network uses the same technology launched by Verizon Wireless in January, and planned for launch by Sprint PCS in July.
