The top "feature" I'll look for on a new Android device is ease of rooting. I've tasted freedom and it's Gingerbread-flavored.

GPS shouldn't be draining the battery unless you are using a GPS-enabled app a lot. The satellite icon will appear when that's active. Bluetooth will also use up the battery quickly, as will constant web-browsing, especially running YouTube as that hits the the radio and the CPU pretty heavy. That said, this phone does have a sub-par battery life. I too bumped down my screen brightness (to 60%) and still have to be aware when I've been talking more than ...

Menu > Settings > Calls (4th icon) > Open to answer (bottom of the list, just press up once)
