Just got my phone yesterday... The back light does stay on during charging on mine too. I did get a 'charging complete' message when the phone was powered off but haven't looked for that message with the phone powered on.
I think since the average life expectancy of a phone is only a few years there is no significant issue. The backlight should last at least that long. If the technology is anything like computer monitors, we'll have no trouble. ...
