My brother was able to play with a demo phone at a retail store, but did not have the specs and I've looked all over the net to no avail. Does anybody know the specs of this flip phone and when it will be released?

Yeah the ads are annoying, especially the in-text ones. But it is the best. Another good one is wirelessadvisor.com forums. No in-text ads there...

My brother had a chance to play with the phone and said the camera quality was impressive. Would love some specs. When will it be released?

Ok, first off this phone was released on December 7th. It is a CDMA only, Alltel exclusive. The phone features full stereo bluetooth, a 1.3 MP camera, and has an easily accesible Micra/Trans Flash SD card slot. This phone is in my opinion in the top three best phones available through Alltel as of right now.

I got one of these on Friday after my 4th Nokia 6255i's hinge finally failed completely. I wasn't able to check out the u520 thoroughly in the store, as the one they had on display had a run-down battery.

The phone itself has a small, good looking package (just over 1/2 as thick as the Nokia, slightly taller box, but an internal antenna). I think is has decent ergonomics though a smallish directional control, and a fast interface most of the time (opening the camera, camcorder, or voice recognition apps has a noticeable delay).

Voice quality seems good and so far the signal reception has been pretty good, but I haven't had it very long. It claims to have an EVDO connection most of the time and 1xRTT on occasion. Anecdotally, th...

Thanks for the heads up. I haven't heard too much either but I HAVE heard of the good reception and call quality. Can you tell me the dimensions? I have read it is about 1" think...is that true?? That seems like a lot compared to the KRZR and V3m which are closer to the 0.5" or 0.6" height. I am looking into buying it outright so any thoughts or heads up you could give would be GREAT. THANKS!!

The phone is a thin phone: the thickness is about 16-17 mm (0.6"-0.7"depending on if you count the tiny hump for the camera lens/flash or not.

Here are some additional cons I've found that are all issues because Alltel choose to cripple the functionality of the phone:

1. Bluetooth profiles are limited. It won't do file transfer (MP3/MID/JPG/etc) or accept contact information. You can't transfer your images/videos off the phone unless you either buy a card or pay $.25 for a multimedia message.

2. It won't allow you to select a ringtone (MP3 or MID) that's stored on the card. It also won't allow you to transfer MP3/WAV/MID to/from a card. The only way to get non-factory standard tones is to go through the Alltel AXCESS store at something like $2 a pop, and then only whatever tones the provider offers. Noting that I've had custom, free WAV ringtones on phones for several ...
