Alltel

Alltel is a small multi-regional carrier offering service in six states: Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Illinois, Ohio and Idaho. Before 2009, Alltel offered service in 33 states. In early 2009, Verizon Wireless acquired most of Alltel. The FCC blocked a complete sale in order to preserve competition in some areas, where the smaller Alltel operates today. In 2005, the company acquired Western Wireless, a smaller carrier that operated under the Cellular One brand with service in 19 western states.
