Any one have any idea when Alltel will begin to deploy EvDO and the accompanying handsets? Alltel is seeming to get behind on a data standpoint if even MetroPCS has plans to launch EvDO before Alltel.. Pity, if Alltel did offer EvDO I'd hop right back to 'em.

Alltel has offered EVDO for over a year now. They released it in Three markets last February and they over 60 markets right now. The Razr is an Evdo phone, starcomm 6700, Blackberry 7130, and the soon to be released E815. What market are you in? I can try to help you out to see if you are in an EVDO market yet or when it will be deployed to you.

Let me re-phrase that: when will Alltel be offering on-par media services via EvDO such as Verizon's V-Cast and Sprint's Music Store/TV. I'm here in Cleveland and how it seems at least, Alltel is behind others when it comes to offering much more than text messaging.

It's called Axcess Services with Alltel.
Here is the link:

Alltel has several EVDO markets (7) and many more by the end of 06 (with a larger evdo coverage area than most carriers by the end of 06).

Well they offer mobitv, axcess radio. Of course they also have the axcess broadband services. The sprint music store is the main one they do not have but they have something to compete with the other services.

Also, the Cleveland and Akron, OH area are already EVDO for Alltel.

I would say Alltel is offering update to date services for your area. That's means Alltel is not behind the other carriers.

Alltel is behind the other carriers in many, many ways. They may offer EvDO as a data service, but like I explained before I meant are they going to release an all encompassing media program via EvDO such as Verizon's V-Cast. All Alltel currently offers is MobiTV, which I hear has nothing but jerky frames and sound never matching with the video. Alltel is behind the other carries, as the two other major players in the CDMA market already have well-known EvDO media offerings. Alltel on the otherhand, does not.

Yes, you are correct. Alltel's Axcess service does not have the full suite of applications the Verzion's V-Cast service. I would suspect the services will become more comparable throughout this year. I have noticed that Alltel's Axcess service has come a long way over the past 6 months.

Actually, my MobiTV works great! I was surprised!

Although Alltel does seem behind in enhanced data services like TV and radio, the fact remains that the huge majority of wireless customers only use their phone for one thing... a phone. I am not saying Vcast and web are unimportant, but Alltel focuses on coverage and robust telephone service which is WAY more important than watching CNN on my phone. EvDO is quickly on its way to more markets. We have it here in the Cleveland market and it is extremely fast for applications and internet. The coverage trumps verizon's as well. (believe it or not)
