Hi Guys, I work for Verizon in an area that Alltel will be divested to another carrier and I was wondering who all here are in markets that are being divested? And who would you like to purchase your divested area?

Hmm... good question. Tough to answer.

Have you seen the map that shows the targeted for divested areas?

I'm an Alltel Agent Owner and I've heard the biggest rumor for Montana, Wyoming, ND SD and Idaho and maybe Nevada. We have all heard that AT&T has already made a play for these areas. Alltel spent some money to build out a limited GSM network in these areas so it would be a starting point. And converting existing towers to GSM has been made easier these days. The other item we have heard would be that Scott Ford, former Alltel CEO has some investment dollars to try to buy the divested areas and create a new wireless company. That one has not been speculated as much. Personally, I'd rather become an AT&T agent but I've heard the agents don't get to sell the Iphone which could be detrimental. Supposedly we'll know more by November 14th

Wow! If Scott Ford were to make a play that would be terrific! I read an article where he said that he tried to but Sprint (thrice) T-Mobile and AT&T Wireless (before Cingular gobbled them up). Ford won't get involved in a new company, unless he can get a national footprint, however. I think as profitable as Alltel was, they were impacted financially by those roaming agreements. This is probably why they kept Western Wireless' GSM assets up and running, to recoup some revenues through roaming charges.

Here's the link from HoFo that shows the areas that are actually being divested. There are a number of markets where Verizon will have both cellular licenses. I don't know how many of those markets Verizon will keep both, but I believe they might swap some of those licenses for extra PCS licenses in markets they're looking for capacity, and maybe with AT&T for some of their cellular licenses in Texas & eastern Florida from the AT&T Wireless buyout (when the new AT&T (yeah right ;) )was Cingular.
