Not for the customer base, Not for the technology, or plans (lol)In fact in most areas where Verizon and Alltel share markets Alltel draws more customers.
The only advantage Alltel users will have is that they can talk ONLY to other Verizon users free. But they can already talk to ALL the other carriers of their choice free with the My Circle Plans. No more Music connect Streaming services

All Verizon wanted is the 850MhZ Spectrum in the Southern US they could not otherwise get through auction. Period. The only way Verizon could expand it's 850MHZ (the prime cell phone space)was to buy Alltel. The merger made it clear the every single one of Alltel's ideas, unique phones, and plans will vanish. They could care less about the customers...T...

I agree. And I assume you were sitting in the conference room with Cellco when they discussed all of this with you.

Did you read bedtime stories to the corp president as well? Or just the VP?

Honestly, I would believe the story, but proof or its not there. Show me an article that says that.

Really? I thought they wanted alltel because it was a profitable business. Heh.

Also... You know... THIS might have something to do with it...?

"We have had our eye on Alltel for quite a long time," Lowell McAdam, Verizon Wireless president and chief executive officer, told Wall Street analysts in a conference call this morning. "It's a great company."

Verizon brings more than 67 million subscribers to the party. Alltel, a Little Rock-based company, has some 13 million subscribers. Combined, the new 80 million-subscriber wireless behemoth would topple the current No. 1, AT&T and its 71.4 million subscribers.

Being number 1 - that in itself brings a lot of customers, they want to have the 'largest' network. Then verizon...

Imagine going from America's Largest Wireless Provider to 2nd. That's what happened to Verizon following the AT&T/Cingular merger. So Verizon made up some ground, but even still it became clear that they would never surpass AT&T in that manner. I am not stating that this is the main reason for the merger though. I believe that the ability to offer current Verizon customers enhanced services (VZ Navigator, 1X data and EVDO where Alltel has rolled out) is a much bigger deal than gaining 13 million Alltel customers. Verizon and Alltel had no data roaming agreement and neither did Verizon and Sprint. Alltel and Sprint DO have a data roaming agreement. So by acquiring Alltel, Verizon is not able to offer 1X and EVDO coverage in current All...

The real reason it happened:

Verizon had money to invest and Alltel was available for purchase. Sure Alltel might not have been Mr. Right, but it was Mr. Right Now.

Also more subscribers and one less competetitor= more ways to screw customers!
